FAQ About The Intake Process
1. What is the intake process like?
It’s a very casual but extremely important process. We will have you fill out an intake form and ask what brought you to our offices, what methods for resolution you’ve tried before, if you’ve worked with an attorney before. We will make sure there are no conflicts of interest that prevent us from taking your case.
Next we will have a discussion about your expectations and specific needs. After our initial assessment we will let you know how we can help, and conversely, if we are not able to help, given your circumstance.
It is important to note that your meeting with us is completely confidential.
2. What can a parent do to prepare?
As a potential client you should bring as many financial documents (such as tax returns) and ” evidence” (such a police report, court orders or reports from social workers) you have with you. Think about your goals and expectations and be ready to talk about what is needed to move toward your end goal. This meeting starts what is called the “discovery process.”
3. What should a potential client not worry about?
Do not worry if you do not have all of the documents at our first meeting. With 38 years of family law and divorce experience, we are able to offer a great deal of assistance in obtaining any information needed for your case. It’s normal to be a bit anxious before a first meeting. Know that we are here to help and will do whatever we can to help you and set your mind at ease.
4. What is your approach like?
At Schaffer Family Law, Ltd., we take a scientific approach to cases. We build our arguments based on facts because facts win cases. Much like a doctor diagnosing an illness, we need to see the “lab reports” before we can create a strategy for a cure. Therefore there is no one-size-fits-all page of what you need to know or bring to our meeting.

As an international family lawyer, I have served clients from all over the world and have successfully handled numerous major federal cases in family law. I am an active member of the International Academy of Family Lawyers (IAFL) and a frequent speaker on this topic.
Secondly, at our firm, you come first. Here, the client is the boss. When I take your case, I work for you.
